- Lock: Any connection between the view frame and the view document is broken (the so-called Live Link is deactivated). The whole view is embedded as an independet object in the layout document. Thereby the current content and extent of the view frame is locked against further modifications. Indeed this consumes a lot of additional memory. In order to reduce the size of the project file all invisible themes are removed from the new view object. You can restore the partial or full link to the view document with Freeze or Relink.
- Freeze: A partial link between the view frame and the view document is established (only the theme objects of the view are linked). The extent of these frames stays unchanged even if the visible extent of the view changes. The content of the frame is linked to the view though. If a theme is turned on or off or a legend is modified, these changes are reflected in the view frame too. But if themes are added or deleted or graphics are edited in the view, the frame is not updated (you must use the Update operation to do this). This kind of link normally does not consume additional memory. Only if the view contains a lot of graphics, the size of the project file may increase a lot.
Hint: Before locking or freezing a frame you should export all graphics and labels from the view into shapefiles or annotation themes (use the Arc4You Annotations & Graphics extension to do this). Thereby you can reduce the usage of memory and the size of the project file significantly and make the handling of the project much easier. You can use the free extension Arc4You Advanced Extents to choose the extent that is shown in the view frame (if you have stored the desired extent in the view earlier).
- Relink: The full link between the view frame and the original view document is re-established (the so-called Live Link is activated). Thereat the view is identified by its name. If the original view can't be found (as it was deleted or renamed), a new view document is created in the project. This kind of link has the disadvantage, that the extent displayed in the frame always changes when the visible extent of the view is paned or zoomed.
Hint: The independent content and extent of the view frame is normally lost (if the view was modified in the meanwhile). If you want to keep the settings of a locked frame and edit it in a separate view document, you must rename the original view document first.
- Update: The contents of locked or frozen view frames are updated, i.e. all themes and graphics are reloaded from the corresponding view document. The extent of the view frame stays unchanged though.
Note: ArcView does not fit a view into a view frame correctly as for the calculation of the aspect ratio not the visible extent but the entire extent of the view is used (including even invisible themes and graphics). Thus it may happen that the extent sligthly changes if you have deleted themes or graphics from a view. Arc4You solves this problem automatically when invisible themes are removed with Lock or Clean.
- Clean: All invisible themes are removed from the view frames in order to reduce the size of the project file. You can use this option if your project already contains several view frames that have been locked using the View Frame Properties of ArcView and you don't want their contents to be editable.
